The Clinical Nurse (HIV Testing Counsellor), you will play a vital role in providing high-quality HIV care, offering counselling, testing, and support services to individuals at risk or seeking information about HIV. You will educate patients on HIV prevention and treatment options, guide them through the testing process, and provide emotional and psychological support. You will also work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to ensure the delivery of comprehensive care.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide per-test counseling to individuals, explaining the HIV testing process, its benefits, and confidentiality policies;
- Conduct HIV testing and ensure the accurate recording and management of test results;
- Offer post-test counseling to help individuals understand their test results and provide emotional support as needed;
- Advise patients on HIV prevention strategies, including safe sex practices, harm reduction, and available resources;
- Provide information on local support groups, clinics, and community resources for individuals living with HIV or at risk;
- Offer psychological and emotional support to patients undergoing testing, particularly those who may receive positive results;
- Maintain a compassionate and non-judgmental attitude towards patients, ensuring they feel heard and supported;
- Assist in the coordination of HIV-related care and services, including the management of patient records, documentation, and follow-up care;
- Monitor and report on patient progress, treatment plans, and any concerns related to the management of HIV care;
- Ensure all patient interactions, testing results, and personal information are kept confidential in accordance with privacy laws and facility guidelines;
- Maintain accurate patient records and documentation related to HIV testing, counseling, and follow-up care;
- Work closely with multidisciplinary healthcare teams, including doctors, social workers, and support staff, to ensure comprehensive patient care;
- Participate in regular training and educational programs related to HIV care and counseling.
Job requirements
- BSc. in clinical nursing from a recognized institution, with a professional license Registered
- Specialized training or certification in HIV care, counseling, and testing is preferred;
Additional skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
- Ability to provide sensitive and empathetic care;
- Strong knowledge of HIV prevention, testing protocols, and treatment options;
- Ability to handle difficult or emotional situations with professionalism and care;
- Knowledge of confidentiality and privacy regulations related to patient care and HIV testing.
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a healthcare team.
- Energetic and willing to work flexible shifts, including weekends;
- Emotionally mature with a sense of humour to maintain balance;
Work Experience:
- 2+ years experience working with HIV patients or in a counseling role is highly desirable.
